Uganda Ranked 6th

The World Giving Report 2025 – Uganda Edition, by CivLegacy Foundation and the Charities Aid Foundation, highlights Uganda’s remarkable generosity. In 2024, 79% of Ugandans gave money—well above the 64% global average—donating 2.04% of their income and volunteering at rates far higher than most countries. Giving is largely informal, directed toward people in need (48.5%) and religious organizations (39%), driven by cultural values, spiritual teachings, and direct community impact. Despite ranking 6th globally in actual giving, Ugandans underestimate their national generosity, placing themselves 62nd in perception.

Barriers to giving are mostly financial, with 63% citing lack of resources, while mistrust in charities is minimal. People are more likely to give when they see tangible impact, have more resources, or trust the sector’s regulation. Civil society enjoys high public regard (12.4/15), though views on government involvement are mixed. Religious communities and word-of-mouth are the main awareness channels, making local networks vital for engagement. The report urges a philanthropic sector that is inclusive, visible, and rooted in Uganda’s cultural values, offering a roadmap for strengthening community-led giving.
